My work consists of paintings that revolve around my Scottish heritage. These paintings are made from images that may be distorted, collaged or manipulated to create a new kind of aesthetic order. Beneath our relationships and institutions there are narratives, shifting the mood of our conversations and perceptions of the world around us. I juxtapose identifiable images relating to my culture with the unexpected to create intrigue and new narratives. A thing that appears familiar becomes new in these configurations. Ancient myths become contemporary explorations of the strange, combined with the desire for beauty. I am interested in investigating my Scottish heritage by researching old folklore and legends. I explore stories and symbols that revolve around fairytales and the unreal. I am interested in using a visual language to explore something ephemeral and non-existent to give a new perspective and share stories that are not commonly known. I use celtic and gaelic symbols and knots to display my ideas in an abstracted world of the almost familiar. I am also exploring my own personal relationship with my culture and using my art to visually express my feelings and experiences growing up in a different country within the same abstract world.
